Seventh Meeting in Delft, The Netherlands, 29 August 2002

Opening
The chairman Sven Olof Enfors opened the meeting and presented the agenda that had been distributed via email to all section members.

Minutes
Minutes from Section meeting nr 6 in Madrid, 2001-07-09. The minutes, which are available on ESBES web-site www.biotech.kth.se/esbes, were discussed and approved.

Board election
The chairman presented the current board members and concluded that the following 3 members had served for two 3-years periods and therefore were obliged to resign, according to the working rules of ESBES: Anders Gram, Lyngby/DK, Alois Jungbauer, Vienna/AU, and Karel Luyben, Delft/NL. The following 3 candidates had previously been nominated by the Section members and presented with c.v. distributed via email to the Section members: Gérard Goma, Toulouse/F, Juan Lema, Santiago de Compostela/ ES and Inger Mollerup, Copenhagen/DK. The following members of the present board were willing to be re-elected for an additional 3-year period: Joaquim Cabral, Sven-Olof Enfors, Patricia Kieran, Carl-Fredrik Mandenius, and Matthias Reuss.
Voting ballots with the 8 candidate names were distributed among the meeting participants and a secret voting was performed. Patricia Ossewijer made the first counting of the 38 ballots. All nominated candidates received minimum 33 votes and chairman concluded that all candidates were elected to the new board.

The 9th board member Bjorn Kristiansen had informed the chairman just before the meeting that he was no more available for re-election. Due to the short notice and the rule that new candidates must be presented for the section members before they can be presented as candidates for a board election, no election of a successor to Kristiansen could be performed. The meeting members were invited to nominate candidates for a complementary election via email that according to the board decision 2002-08-28 was to be organised by the chairman before the next board meeting. The current board members are listed on the section web-site.

Working Group activities
The chairmen of the Working Groups informed about previous and coming activities in their Working Groups. Carl-Fredrik Mandenius informed about the International Conference on Trends in Monitoring and Control of Life Science Applications, that is organised by the Working Group M3C in Lyngby/DK, October 7-8,2002.

The European Biochemical Engineering Design Award
Patricia Kieran informed about the award that was announced in December 2001 to be granted for the first time during ESBES-4. The award is based on a generous grant from Novo Nordisk Engineering A/S. P. Kieran informed that the number of applicants were very limited and poorly distributed over the European universities. The evaluation committee had therefore in agreement with Novo Nordisk Engineering decided not to grant any award this year. P. Kieran will distributed during ESBES 4 a questionary as a means to investigate the reason why the award had attracted so few students.
ESBES-5. The chairman informed about the board decision to accept Matthias Reuss proposal to organise next European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science (ESBES-5) in Stuttgart or Heidelberg in end of August or early September, 2004.

Next Meeting
Next Section Meeting was decided to be arranged by the chairman during ECB11 in Basel. Date and place will be announced by the chairman after contacts with the organisers of ECB11.

The chairman closed the meeting
