Sixth Meeting in Madrid, Spain, 9 July 2001

Information from the chairman
Sven Olof Enfors (SOE) describes the establishment of the ESBES section, the activities (ESBES symposium series, Malcolm Lilly award, European Biochemical Engineering Design award (newly est. by Novo Nordisk Engineering AS), Working Group activities).
The new web site address is introduced: http://www.biotech.kth.se/esbes. This constitutes the main source of information of the ESBES activities. Contents of the web.site includes registration for ESBES activities, minutes etc. Minutes from the former ESBES Section meeting V can be found on this site.

The financial situation reviewed by the chairman.

Task group reports (WG chairmen)
Down stream processing/Jungbauer; A list of coming activities was presented, Bioreactor performance/Lübbert; A position paper on QA/QC has been written, a course on Bioprocess Engineering will take place in Sept 2001 and a Biosystems Engineering science conference is planned for 2002, M3C/Sonnleitner, Biotransformations/Cabral.

Information about the coming ESBES 4 meeting in Delft during Aug. 28-31, 2002.
L. van der Wielen describes the conference venue and registration can be made on the web site. New additions to the programme are still welcome. A list of the topics for the plenary lectures and sessions are presented. Other activities, satellite events, but the WG programme is also welcome. The social programme is presented.

Jan 15, 2002: Deadline for submission of abstracts/grant application/submissions for the M. D. Lilly award
March 1, 2002 Poster abstracts
April 2002: Notification of acceptance of abstracts
May 2002: Deadline for early registration

Bids for ESBES ­ 5 in 2004
Dr. Bardone chairman and CEO Snamprogetti Biotechnologie present his suggestion of Florence as the venue for the coming meeting. The bid is still open until 31 of October 2001.

Announcement of the start of the election procedure for new members for the ESBES Board for 2002-2005.

The section statutes states a maximum of six years for the participation of a specific board member. A year before the new election an announcement is made to the ESBES members for suggestion of candidates. Members are encouraged to put forward their suggestions, which should include the name and a brief CV, to the ESBES chairman. The new Board will be elected during ESBES-4.
